It exists because video is a terrible format for finding things. A two-hour podcast holds maybe four sentences you actually need, and the only way to reach them is to drag a scrubber back and forth guessing. The same recording as text is searchable in a second.

So the transcript is the product, and it is free. Everything on top of it — the readable version with its punctuation restored, the summary, the chapters, the questions you can ask about the video — runs off that same text and is what the paid plan pays for.

The website and the extension share one pipeline and one account. Captions come from YouTube's own tracks, server-side; anything AI is handed to Gemini from there. We don't re-host or re-encode any video, and there is no speech recognition — a video with no captions is one we say no to rather than guess at.
